Black sun review

review fromMetal Observer.de

One thing in advance, who wonders that there is no rating for this one, the promo of "Black Sun" is, as sometimes with Nuclear Blast, a CD with three complete songs and ten faded out. I do my chronist's duty and tell you something about this album, but such CDs do not get a rating... OK, for the fourth time the band around Ralf Scheepers is at the start and "the German answer to JUDAS PRIEST", as they are called here and there, hasn't really changed. It's still forceful Power Metal, without frills, borne by Scheepers' original voice, which at times, of course, reminds a bit of early GAMMA RAY. Had I never been completely satisfied with the first three releases by PRIMAL FEAR (which I have all, just to avoid any confusion), so I can attest the Germans that they continue to get better by the album. Of course also "Black Sun" will not really win any prizes for originality, but the steel that is forged by the five guys is of top quality, as such strong tracks as the title-track, "Fear" or the very melodic yet still powerful "Mind Control" prove. Forceful double-bass and an overall very good drum-performance go along with powerful and catchy riffs, which still crack like ka-boom and to lose many words about Ralf Scheepers' vocals would be a waste of time, he is renowned to be one of the best shouters of this sub-genre and anno 2002 nothing has changed. As the production also is nicely powerful and clear, I can without second thought attest PRIMAL FEAR a really strong effort that finally has without a doubt established them in the first division of German Power Metal. With "Black Sun" the quintet has forged a really strong piece of Power Metal, which as a full CD would have received a rating between 8 and 8,5.
