After performing in Gamma Ray for a few years and almost placing himself on Judas Priest’s vocalist throne, Ralf Scheepers formed his own outfit, Primal Fear, with Mat Sinner (Bass). Mat is also the founding member of Sinner, a German metal band reminiscent of Accept. Mat and Ralf collectively perform in both Sinner and Primal Fear, the only difference is Mat is the main vocalist in Sinner while Ralf does the vocal duties here. Musically, the two groups sound similar, but vocally Primal Fear is 100% Judas Priest influenced and Sinner has a rougher, rawer edge. And, while Sinner has been around since the 80’s, Primal Fear released their first CD in ’98. Henny Wolter (Guitars) also performs in both bands.

But anyway, 'Angel In Black' starts things off very fast and Primal Fear keeps the finger on the trigger throughout most of the songs. A few tracks, like 'Now Or Never' and 'Bleed For Me', do slow down a touch, but they are still very heavy. And furthermore, they are 100% metal numbers. Also, 'Now Or Never' is one song where Mat’s influence is very evident. I could easily picture it on The End Of Sanctuary, which was the previous Sinner release. But the real gems on this CD are the title-track, 'Red Rain', 'Fire On The Horizon' and the closing 'Living For Metal'.

Yes, it’s true, people will call Primal Fear a Judas Priest clone and they are very similar in the vocal department. I won’t lie to you about that, and musically you might think, "I’ve heard it all before". But, needless to say, a CD like this puts some pressure on Priest and Halford, pertaining to new releases from them. They have some competition on their rears by the name of Primal Fear. And, since this is my first CD from the band I know what I will be buying next
